Samir “Sam” G. Hanna RPLS

BOARD CHAIRMAN, PRINCIPAL

In 1968, Sam Hanna received a B.S. in Engineering, Major in Surveying, from Cairo Polytechnic Institute in Cairo, Egypt. He arrived in the United States as an immigrant in 1970 and became licensed as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas in 1975.

From 1977 to 1994, Sam was Senior Vice President for a large national engineering firm and was responsible for overseeing company-wide survey operations and managing up to 300 personnel, including numerous licensed surveyors and more than 50 field crews. He worked directly with a diversified group of engineering, geological, natural science, and environmental professionals.

Sam founded SAM, LLC (formerly known as SAM, Inc.) in 1994 and currently serves as Board Chairman. Under his direction, the company expanded its initial offering of Land Surveying services to include Digital Aerial Mapping (Photogrammetry), full‐service Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), Utility Coordination, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Construction Phase Services. Sam's philosophy of recruiting the best people and providing the most advanced equipment and training helped maximize the firm's efficiency and he personally guided the company's methodology and approach to delivering high quality services. In December of 2016 Sam announced his retirement from the daily management of the company, but retains a position as Chairman of the Board and continues to serve as an advisor to the management team.

Sam has been practicing Land Surveying for over 40 years. His experience includes projects with both the private and public sector, including local, state, and federal governments. His experience also includes six years in the U.S. Army Reserve as Chief Construction Surveyor. He is currently a member of numerous professional associations including the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS), American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveying (MAPPS), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), and International Right of Way Association (IRWA).

Christopher M. Solomon RPLS

President & CEO, Principal

Chris Solomon joined SAM at its inception in 1994. He has over 25 years of extensive experience delivering multidisciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. His experience at SAM has spanned the full-range of responsibilities involving business development, project management, and financial management. As the President and CEO, he is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the company by working with the Board of Directors and the executive management team to establish long-range goals, strategies, operational plans, policies, and the allocation of resources to accomplish the company objectives.

Chris is a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas and holds an Applied Science degree in Land Surveying from Tyler Junior College. He is a member in industry associations including Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, Association of Petroleum Surveying and Geomatics, International Right-of-Way Association, Pipeliners Association of Houston, Gas Processors Association, San Antonio Pipeliners Association, and Southern Gas Association.

Chris’s favorite SAM core value is People and he has a passion for mentoring and developing employees. He is actively involved in his community through his volunteer efforts with the TxDOT Adopt-a-Highway program and Reed Elementary School. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and three children.

Robert E. Butler, Jr. RPLS

COO, PRINCIPAL

Rob Butler joined SAM in 2004. He has over 25 years of experience delivering expert multidisciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. His experience at SAM has spanned the full-range of responsibilities involving business development, project management and financial management with an emphasis in airborne, mobile and terrestrial LiDAR, engineering design surveying, boundary and right-of-way surveying, and construction surveying. As the Chief Operating Officer, he is responsible for leading operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems, to effectively grow the organization and ensure financial strength and operating efficiency.

Rob has been a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas since 2002 and is a graduate of the Surveying and Mapping Technology program at Tyler Junior College. He is a member of industry associations including Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, National Society of Professional Surveyors, American Council of Engineering Companies of Texas, and the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors.

Rob’s favorite SAM core value is Excellence in Service. His belief that providing the highest quality products and listening to the clients’ needs will establish long lasting relationships is fundamental to the success of SAM. He is actively involved in his community through his work in the TxDOT Adopt-a-Highway program and Camp Quality Texas, an organization that supports children battling cancer. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and step-sons.

Travis Engelke

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Travis Engelke joined SAM in 2016. He has more than 25 years experience in financial management, with a considerable background in the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. He has managed finance and operations for several companies, from modest size to multi-billion dollar enterprises, with extensive experience in the full range of financial management responsibilities including accounting and financial management, business planning and analysis, growth strategy development, resource management, mergers and acquisitions, contract management, financial analysis and reporting, treasury and investment administration, executive governance, and several other key finance areas. For SAM, Travis provides financial oversight for the entire company and its subsidiaries, and has a leadership role in helping the company continue to extend its market strengths for future growth.

Travis has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Northern Kentucky University and Executive Leadership certification from the University Of Michigan Ross School Of Business. He is active in several finance and AEC industry associations.

Travis’ favorite core value is Integrity and Ethics. He approaches every aspect of his life with a high moral compass and believes it is the only way to operate. Travis is a former professional athlete, playing competitive golf for a number of years. While no longer playing competitively, Travis has developed numerous youth golf programs and enjoys teaching/coaching the sport in the communities where he lives. Originally from Cincinnati, Travis relocated to Austin, where he resides with his wife and three children.

Michael R. Hatcher RPLS

Sr. Vice President, Principal

Mike Hatcher joined SAM at its founding in 1994. He has 42 years of experience in the AEC industry, with the last 34 years as a Professional Land Surveyor. His experience at SAM has included a broad range of responsibilities, covering business operations management, project management, and business development. As a Senior Vice President and long-time Principal in the firm, he is responsible for advising and supporting the COO, the Transportation Market Vertical Lead, and the rest of the executive management team in establishing operational plans, policies, and transportation market growth strategies.

Mike studied electrical and bioengineering at Texas A&M University and is a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Texas. He is a member in industry associations such as the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, National Society of Professional Surveyors, and International Right-of-Way Association.

Mike’s favorite SAM core value is Excellence in Service and he has strived throughout his career to mentor SAM’s Project Managers in how to deliver best-in-industry services to our clients. He is involved with local, state, and national community programs through his volunteer efforts with the TxDOT Adopt-a-Highway program, support for local animal shelters and Humane Societies, and volunteer and financial support for national organizations that are training the future political leaders of our country.

Coleman Cunningham

Sr. Vice President, Principal

Coleman Cunningham joined SAM soon after its founding in 1994. He has over 40 years of experience in surveying and has successfully managed project work for clients in the electric transmission, oil and gas, and construction industries, as well as a variety of public sector clients.

Coleman has served many roles during his career at SAM. Among them, he was Principal-In-Charge of the Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Department, he established the Construction Surveying Department, and he has overseen our Corporate Field Operations since joining the company. Coleman has also managed SAM's Corporate Safety Operations, he is Principal-In-Charge of the Construction Staking Division, and he continues to be highly involved with Corporate Capital Expenditures. He is a member of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS), Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), Austin Contractors and Engineers Association (ACEA), Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC), and the International Right-of-Way Association (IRWA).

Coleman’s favorite SAM core value is People and he is passionate about helping and caring for them. He is active in the community by helping others in need and he volunteers for several nonprofit organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House and Central Texas Food Bank. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and enjoys hunting, fishing, and quality time with his four beautiful grandchildren.

S. Keith McNease RPLS, PLS, CP

Sr. Vice President, Principal

Keith McNease joined SAM in 1996. He has over 25 years of extensive experience delivering multi-disciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. His experience at SAM has spanned the full-range of responsibilities involving business development, project management, and financial management. As a Senior Vice President, he is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the SAM Federal Programs team.

Keith is a Professional Land Surveyor and a Photogrammetric Surveyor/ ASPRS Certified Photogrammetrist. He is licensed in Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Surveying and Mapping Technology from the University of Houston. He is a member of several industry associations including the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS), the Management Association of Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS) and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME).

Keith enjoys hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and competitive shooting. His top core value is Excellence in Service and he's been a champion for exemplary client service at SAM. He strongly believes in education and supports community elementary school programs, as well as serving in an academic advisory capacity for geospatial programs at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. Keith currently resides in Texas with his wife.

Gregory K. McKnight PSM

Sr. Vice President, Principal

Gregory McKnight joined SAM in 2011. He has over 35 years of extensive experience delivering multi-disciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. His experience at SAM includes serving as the Dallas Office Manager, the Central Regional Director, and Head of the Electric Sector Market and Business Development. Currently, as the Corporate Director of Business Development, he is responsible for directing and overseeing the business development strategies for SAM Companies. Through collaboration with office managers, market leads, client champions, discipline leaders, and business development staff, he leads the annual strategic planning process, market analysis and strategic resource planning, and the management and tracking of SAM’s growth strategies and initiatives. Gregory is a Professional Surveyor and Mapper in Florida and is a member of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society.

Gregory’s favorite SAM core value is People. He believes that people are the cornerstone of company success and has spent his career mentoring, developing, and creating opportunities for individuals to grow and succeed in our industry. Greg is involved with various shelters in his community including no-kill animal shelters.

H. Stroud Evans

Sr. Vice President, Principal

Stroud Evans joined SAM in 2010. He has over 27 years of extensive experience delivering multi-disciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. His experience at SAM has spanned the full-range of responsibilities involving business development, project management, and financial management. As the Transportation Market Lead, he is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the company by working with the Board of Directors and executive management team to establish long-range goals, strategies, operational plans, policies, and the allocation of resources to accomplish the transportation objectives of the SAM companies.

Stroud is a member of several industry associations including American Council of Engineering Companies, Women’s Transportation Seminar, International Right-of-Way Association, and American Society of Civil Engineers.

Stroud’s favorite SAM core value is Community because our organization’s foundation is built by caring for the greater community where we live and work. He gives back and serves his community through volunteer efforts with Communities in Schools, Partnership for Children, and Life Austin. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and four children.

M. Brett Smith PE

Sr. Vice President, Principal, Engineer-In-Charge

Brett Smith joined SAM in 2013 and has over 20 years of engineering, construction, construction management, and utility management experience. He has spent most of the last decade performing project management for TxDOT and tolling authorities and has held management positions on some of the largest toll road construction projects in Texas, including the North Tarrant Express Segments 3 in Fort Worth and the Sam Rayburn Tollway in Dallas. His construction engineering experience also includes program administration of several large design-build and design-bid-build projects.

As a Senior Vice President and Engineer-In-Charge, Brett has a leadership role for SAM and SAM-CS service programs for transportation, electric transmission, oil and gas, and water/wastewater projects. His responsibilities include management of services for construction engineering and inspection, SUE/UC, program management, contract administration, implementation of QA/QC programs, and development of construction/materials quality manuals and specifications.

Brett is a Registered Professional Engineer in Texas and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Utah. His favorite core value is Integrity and Ethics and he excels at providing exceptional service for clients. He and his family enjoy fostering dogs for an animal rescue organization, helping his local FFA chapter, and spending time outdoors with his three children.

Patrick A. Smith RPLS

Sr. Vice President, Associate

Pat Smith has more than 45 years of experience delivering multidisciplinary professional services to the AEC industry and has been a Registered Professional Land Surveyor since 1984. He was the Owner and President of his own surveying company for 17 years and his career includes leadership positions with several national engineering and surveying firms. At SAM, Pat supports the CEO and COO in managing the company's operations and business practices, including contract administration, risk management, insurance and benefit programs, mergers and acquisitions, office leasing, and business strategy development.

Pat is very active with industry affairs and stewardship. As a member of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS) since 1984, he has served in all its officer positions, including as TSPS President in 2000. He is also a longstanding member of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), serving as President in 2014 and currently as Chair of the NSPS Governmental Affairs Committee.

Pat's favorite core value is People. He is amazed at the level of talent and energy in the people we attract to SAM and is excited to collaborate with and mentor them in growing their careers. Kevin Richardson PS, PLS, RPLS

Vice President, Associate

Kevin Richardson has been delivering multidisciplinary professional services in the AEC industry for more than 25 years. He has an extensive background in business practices, personnel management, and financial management and was previously a partner and owner of his own company in Cincinnati, growing the firm substantially and then ultimately selling the business to a larger Ohio company. With SAM, Kevin is the Eastern Regional Director, focused primarily on expanding company growth and business development for that region, as well as serving in a leadership role for the company at large.

Kevin is a licensed professional land surveyor in Ohio, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Texas and a member of several professional and industry-related associations including the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio (PLSO), the Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA), the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and the International Right of Way Association (IRWA).

Kevin's favorite core value is Excellence in Service. He strongly believes the key to business success lies in delivering an exceptional client experience with innovative solutions and the highest quality products and services. Gary S. Vedro RPLS

Sr. Vice President, Associate

Gary Vedro has over 30 years of experience delivering multidisciplinary professional services in the AEC industry. Located in the Dallas Office, he is a Senior Vice President and Regional Operations Manager. His responsibilities include assisting the Chief Operating Officer to ensure our Central and Western Region offices’ operational teams run at their peak efficiency and profitability, by reviewing staffing needs, overseeing financials, mentoring office leaders, and assuring collaboration across offices throughout the company. His leadership and management experience also helps SAM ensure the accuracy, completeness, and on-time delivery of all work we perform.

Gary’s professional experience spans a wide range of projects with agencies such as TxDOT, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, municipal and county governments, utility companies, and private development clients. He has extensive project experience in electric transmission, rail, transportation, land development, civil design, and construction. He has been a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in the Texas since 1991 and is a graduate of Texas State Technical College, with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He also is a member of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors.

Gary’s favorite SAM core value is People. He believes successful leaders are ones who become more conscious of the culture they create in an organization. They should strive to create cultures that understand teamwork, where employees feel valued, are empowered, and can identify a path for the future. Gary is active in the community by helping others in need and volunteers at the North Texas Food Bank. He enjoys working on home improvement projects with his wife, outdoor activities, and spending time with his six grandchildren.

Gregory S. Cleveland PE, CCM

Vice President, Associate

Greg Cleveland joined SAM in 2014 and has 25 years of engineering, construction, and project management experience on traditional, design-build, and public-private partnership (P3) projects throughout Texas. His expertise includes administration of construction contracts, construction inspection, materials engineering, pavement design, and maintenance activities. He has served in management roles on some of the largest projects in Texas. As a former TxDOT employee at the District and Division level, he has co-authored several TxDOT publications to include the Design-Build Quality Assurance Program, 2004 Standard Specifications, Pavement Design Manual, and the Local Government Project Procedures Manual. He has served on multiple Texas and National research projects and has published numerous technical publications.

As a Vice President, Greg has a leadership role for SAM and SAM-CS and serves as our Director of Construction Services where he is responsible for construction contract execution and administration, field engineering, quality control, and implementation of construction phase software services. Additional responsibility includes business development for Construction, Engineering, and Inspection (CEI) and Construction Management contracts. Greg is a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas, Colorado, Georgia, and Arizona and holds a Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University, respectively. In 2014, Greg became a nationally Certified Construction Manager (CCM). 

Greg's favorite core value is People and he excels at mentoring, training, and developing employees. Actively involved in his community, Greg has volunteered as a math tutor to middle school students, team photographer for local youth sports, and guest lecturer in engineering at several colleges. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and two children.

Cookie F. Munson JD

VICE PRESIDENT, GENERAL COUNSEL & SECRETARY, ASSOCIATE

Cookie Munson has served as SAM’s General Counsel and Secretary for over 5 years and has been practicing law for over 30 years. As A Vice President and Associate with the firm, she has extensive expertise in corporate law, business law, contracts, mergers and acquisitions, compliance and other business-related legal affairs. Cookie represents SAM in a myriad of legal and business matters including corporate governance, executive compensation plans, mergers and acquisitions, policy, risk prevention and management, protection of intellectual property and a wide range of other legal affairs. Her expertise with the company includes legal counsel regarding SAM’s diverse line of services.

Prior to joining SAM, Cookie was a Senior Attorney in the firm of Selman, Munson & Lerner, PC where she specialized in M&A, and prior to that, as General Counsel for 11 years with seven related entities in food manufacturing and packaging, food spice and blending, aviation, transportation, marine charter operations, real estate holdings, and land and cattle operations. She received her B.B.A. in Accounting from Texas Tech University, a Juris Doctorate from St. Mary's University School of Law, and is a member of several professional legal organizations. Cookie serves as a member of the UT CLE Merger’s & Acquisition Institute Planning Committee and enjoys supporting a team in creating one of the nation’s largest conferences focused on M&A and attended by professionals from all over the world.

Cookie is very committed to public service and her favorite SAM core value is Community. She is a member of the Board of Governors of LifeWorks Austin, a local nonprofit providing counseling, housing and education/workforce services for at-risk young adults and families. Her philosophy is to find a way to pay it forward every single day, and she is most proud of SAM’s Corporate Social Responsibility program implemented to support the Company’s long-standing tradition of improving the communities where we work and live. She also enjoys hiking, cycling and running with friends in the Texas Hill Country and traveling with family to destinations abroad.

Dana Smola PHR, SHRM-CP

Director of Human Resources, Associate

Dana Smola has been the Director of Human Resources for SAM Companies since 2014. She has over 20 years of experience in HR, with more than 10 years leading initiatives for AEC companies. With an extensive knowledge of employee relations, regulatory compliance, and benefits program management, she has been recognized for her leadership aligning HR competencies with effective business strategy.

Dana is a graduate of San Diego State University, earning a B.A. in psychology with a focus on organizational development. She holds certifications as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and from the Society for Human Resources Certified Professional (SHRM-CP).

Dana strongly believes in SAM's core value of Integrity and Ethics and this reinforces how she approaches her daily interactions and support for others. She spends time in the community supporting her church and non-profit organizations such as Compassion International. Dana resides in Texas with her husband and two sons.

Todd Baker CSP, ARM

Director of Health and Safety

Todd Baker has been at the forefront of safety culture development at SAM since coming on board as the Director of Health and Safety in 2013. He began his career over 15 years ago as a safety professional in the pipeline industry, overseeing all safety aspects of field operations for new construction, repair, and replacement. As a contractor safety coordinator in the chemical processing and oil refining industries, he developed an in-depth knowledge of heavy construction as well as hard-craft, soft-craft, and technology driven service providers. Focused on developing safety culture through engagement at all levels of employment and across all departments, he has successfully created and implemented health, safety, and environmental programs at multiple companies.

Todd is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and holds the designations of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Associate in Risk Management (ARM). He is a member of the American Association of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and participates in the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA).

As a native Texan growing up in the refinery and chemical processing community of Deer Park, Todd has a special appreciation for SAM’s core value of Safety. He now calls Austin home and enjoys spending time with his wife and contributing to his community through volunteering for the TxDOT Adopt-a-Highway program and the CareBOX cancer patient supply delivery program.
