With no possibility of a direct connect and results of ground penetrating radar not providing clear input, SAM switched gears and developed a plan to use an advanced inspection crawler to identify the location and condition of utilities in a 21-inch concrete pipe with multiple 45-degree bends that runs along a road.
The crawler was lowered into the storm water pipe and guided by a single-channel digital wireless remote controller for approximately 290 feet. The crawler provided photos, and video, specifically of key design elements, like tie-ins, and bends that were especially important to the client. The images revealed unusual amounts of silt within the utility, and with that information, the client immediately adjusted their approach and design on the project.
