Ready for Takeoff: SAM Awarded Contract to Provide Geomatics Solutions for Vance Air Force Base

February 6, 2023

SAM has been awarded a contract with IHC Scott to provide turnkey geomatics solutions for multiple phases of the Vance Air Force Base (VAFB) runway repair project. Located in Enid, Oklahoma, VAFB plans to raise the existing infrastructure to reduce excessive flooding occurrences and update the runway lighting. Our advanced geospatial solutions will support a substantial scope of work throughout the project’s lifecycle.

“This is not just an airport; it’s also a hub for intensive U.S. Air Force pilot training. Runways and flight operations will remain active while our crews perform the field work. Like any contract, we are approaching this in a unique and safe manner and with the utmost respect for ongoing flight operations. We’re pleased to offer our resources and deploy field crews quickly,” said SAM Operations Manager, Andy Wesley.

In the preliminary phase, SAM will reference and establish geodetic control to provide IHC Scott with precise data models for stringless paving operations. Our team will collect and create a high-definition terrain surface to support the rerouting of active taxiways and implement a temporary runway location. Before the earthwork operations begin, our crews will predetermine the stationing of milling areas and striped topsoil. SAM will help delineate asphalt and concrete removal locations and capture digital-grade staking information.

For the next phase, which is set to begin in the spring of 2023, our crews will perform layout, inspection staking, and assist with quality control for the airport improvements. The IHC Scott team will raise the runway’s surface in increments while SAM crews capture real-time vertical and horizontal measurements, calculate the quantities of new asphalt volumes, and ensure that the correct elevations are maintained before and after each runway modification.

SAM was selected by IHC Scott, in part, due to our successful history working with them and our exemplary reputation for superior quality and safety. Our personnel are well-trained in adhering to the level of compliance for the Army Corps of Engineers and are experienced in conducting services in aviation environments and secured facilities. Additionally, we are fully prepared to work day and night shifts to accommodate the schedule and needs of our clients.
