National Preparedness Month 2026: Americans Stand Ready

National Preparedness Month

Safety is one of SAM’s core values, and that commitment extends beyond the jobsite.

September is National Preparedness Month, an opportunity to consider how prepared we are for emergencies at home, at work, on the road, and in the field. This year’s theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” highlights the importance of planning ahead so individuals, families, workplaces, and communities can respond safely when the unexpected occurs.

Emergencies can happen anywhere and often with little warning. Severe weather, flooding, wildfires, power outages, medical emergencies, and other unexpected events can quickly disrupt normal routines. While we cannot prevent every emergency, being prepared can help reduce risk, minimize confusion, and allow us to respond more effectively.

Preparedness starts with a plan. Take time to talk with your family about what you would do in an emergency, including evacuation routes, shelter locations, communication methods, and meeting places. Make sure your plan accounts for children, older adults, pets, and anyone who may require additional assistance.

It is also important to maintain basic emergency supplies. Water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, phone chargers, and copies of important documents can all be useful if normal services are temporarily disrupted.

Staying informed is another key part of preparedness. Enable emergency alerts on your mobile devices, monitor reliable local weather and emergency information, and understand the hazards that may affect your area.

At work, know the emergency procedures for your office or jobsite, including exits, assembly areas, shelter locations, and the location of emergency equipment. For those who spend time in the field or travel frequently, take a few moments to learn about potential hazards in your current location and keep appropriate emergency supplies in your vehicle.

The idea behind “Americans Stand Ready” is simple: preparedness strengthens our ability to respond when circumstances change quickly. When people know what to do, have the right supplies, and stay informed, they are better positioned to protect themselves and support those around them.

This National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes to review your plans, replenish your supplies, and talk with the people around you about preparedness. A little planning now can make a meaningful difference when it matters most.
