Holiday Ladder Safety Tips: Protecting What Matters Most This Season

November 24, 2025

As the holiday season arrives, homes, businesses, begin to light up with decorations that bring warmth and celebration to our communities. While these traditions create memorable moments, they often involve working at heights, which can introduce serious safety risks if proper precautions are not taken.

At SAM, safety is not only a workplace priority, it is a core value that extends beyond the job site and into the communities and homes of our team members, clients, and partners. Whether decorating a home, office, or outdoor space, or on a job site taking the right approach to ladder safety helps ensure the season stays joyful and injury-free.

  1. Choose and Inspect the Right Ladder

Start by selecting a ladder that is designed for the task and properly rated for your weight and any equipment you may be using. Before climbing, inspect the ladder for damage such as cracked rails, bent rungs, missing feet, or loose hinges. A damaged ladder should never be used.

  1. Set Up for Stability

A solid setup is critical for safe ladder use. Always position ladders on firm, level surfaces and avoid slick or uneven ground. For extension ladders, follow the 4:1 rule by placing the base one foot away from the structure for every four feet of ladder height. Make sure the ladder is fully opened, locked, and secure before climbing.

  1. Climb with Care

Maintain three points of contact while climbing to preserve balance and control. Face the ladder, keep your body centered between the rails, and move slowly and intentionally. Instead of overreaching, climb down and reposition the ladder to stay safely aligned with your work area.

  1. Use Extra Support When Possible

Having someone steady the ladder can significantly improve stability. Using a tool belt or rope system to carry lights and decorations helps keep your hands free and improves your ability to maintain balance.

  1. Watch the Weather and Lighting

Cold and wet conditions can turn routine decorating into a dangerous activity. Avoid using ladders in high winds, rain, snow, or icy conditions, and ensure the work area is well lit so each step and surface is clearly visible.

By following these simple safety practices, everyone can enjoy a brighter, safer holiday season.
