SAM is proud to announce that the American Council of Engineering Companies of Florida (ACEC-FL) recognized a project our team contributed to with a 2022 Outstanding Environmental Project Award.
This Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 3 infrastructure improvement project extended over three and a half miles of SR 369 (US 319) Crawfordville Highway in Wakulla County, from south of East Ivan Road to north of SR 267 from two to four lanes. The road expansion falls along a hurricane evacuation route. It contributes to public safety by reducing congestion and making it easier for residents to escape in the event of a storm.
Part of the roadway crosses Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, a delicate and environmentally significant karst area. By partnering with the FDOT district, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the state park, the project team faced environmental challenges, including designing storm water ponds in closed basins and the karst environment.
SAM teams conducted existing condition surveys, located geotechnical borings for the potential pond sites, identified underground cave crossings within the proposed highway footprint, and prepared the project Right of Way Control Survey.
SAM Project Manager Jim Melcher said, “The recognition by ACEC of the care that everyone involved in the project took at every stage to preserve the integrity of the delicate underground cave systems is significant. We are glad to have been able to have helped improve the safety of the county’s residents while also protecting the delicate natural environment in this region.”
