Engineers Week 2023: Employee Spotlight on Ryan Matthews

February 22, 2023

Congratulations to Ryan Matthews on his recent Young Member of the Year Award from the Society of American Military Engineers!

Ryan joined SAM in 2016 as a Project Manager and was promoted to Utility Engineering Department Manager in 2018, working out of our Dallas, TX, office. He works closely with other department managers, market leads, and regional and national senior leadership.

Recipients of this award are recognized for their hard work and exceptionalism in the industry. In honor of National Engineers Week, we have asked Ryan about his background.

Do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on? Why was it special?

“My favorite project with SAM was our mapping of the Dallas College utilities across four of their campuses. I enjoyed this project because it was a significant undertaking to deliver during the summer of 2020 when there were new COVID restrictions and procedures on top of the many complexities and stakeholders that typically come with large-scale projects. Our team at SAM coordinated with the college, other stakeholders, and our field personnel and delivered the project on time to Dallas College.”

What three words describe you best?

“Passionate, perceptive, and efficient.”

What makes a great leader?

“A great leader is empathetic and knows how to motivate different people with types of personalities. I believe a leader should also understand the importance of work-life balance and that happy employees do the best work.”

What are some things no one would guess about you?

“I’m an avid scratch golfer, I enjoy hunting, and I love to cheer on the LSU Tigers on Saturdays.”
