SAM Awarded Ongoing Contract by Midwest IOU

March 1, 2023

SAM has been awarded an ongoing contract by a large Midwest Investor-Owned Utility (IOU) to provide geomatics solutions across its service area. This contract is part of a continuous effort by the IOU to improve reliability and support system upgrades.

To make these planned upgrades to the system and ensure compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), it is critical the IOU understands existing capacity. As with many legacy IOUs, they have incomplete or missing asset information and details.

SAM crews will perform Terrestrial LiDAR scanning for potentially thousands of distribution and transmission substations across the region. Once complete, our team will convert this data into 3D models in a user-friendly format for the IOU to be able to reference.

SAM was chosen for this ongoing contract because our client recognized our ability to quickly mobilize a large number of scanning crews. Additionally, SAM has the in-house technicians needed to collect the data and process the 3D modeling deliverables under tight deadlines.

“SAM’s long-time investment in our people and technology means we are prepared when tasked with a significant challenge supporting long-term infrastructure upgrades for a safe and reliable grid,” said SAM East Region Electric Market Lead and Associate, Jason Caskey. “Our reputation in the electric power industry means program leaders trust SAM will support their project timeline with an accurate assessment of available resources.”
